National Director of Census 2010 - Los Angeles, CA

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) is the nation’s leading Latino litigation, advocacy, and educational outreach institution. Founded in 1968 in San Antonio, Texas, MALDEF works to safeguard the civil rights of Latinos and empower the community to fully participate in American society. We are currently
seeking a National Director of Census 2010 to direct the development and implementation of a national bilingual, multi-media community outreach and education effort to launch in mid-2009, to promote the Latino community's participation in the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of the Census decennial population count in 2010.

Job Responsibilities: Works closely with MALDEF President and General Counsel, Senior Executive Staff, Regional Counsels, media consultants, and Census project staff to plan and direct all facets of MALDEF's National Census 2010 Program. Coordinates MALDEF's national policy activities related to the Census and consults with appropriate legal and legislative staff for policy development, and monitors the development and implementation of national 2010 Census policy. Oversees MALDEF's Census Advisory Committee and serves as liaison with the Bureau of the Census and other national organizations regarding pertinent Census issues. Monitors the
U.S. Census Bureau and national policy makers’ development of census policies and serves as MALDEF’s liaison with the Bureau of the Census and other national organizations regarding Census issues. Represents MALDEF in public forums on 2010 Census issues. Coordinates, promotes, and oversees the MALDEF national census media campaign. Oversees regional community educations campaigns, and works with other national organizations on census issues. Manages the day-to-day operations of the 2010 Census Program and directly manages and supervises program staff of four.

Requirements:
-Must have a Bachelor’s Degree with a major in communications, political science, social sciences or related field. Graduate degree preferred.
-Minimum 5 years of community outreach, campaign organizing, public speaking, policy making and/or legal experience.
-Minimum 4 years management and supervisory experience required.
-Experience in working with national policy makers required.
-Must be a proven leader with extensive experience in coordinating community education outreach efforts in the Latino community, having the skill and knowledge to lead a highly visible and fast moving campaign.
-Must be an excellent communicator and public speaker, fluent in written and spoken English and Spanish, and experienced working with print, broadcast, and online media.
-Must be able to convey the organizational mission and goals to a wide variety of audiences and be able to work cooperatively with a variety of public and private entities.
-Must be an effective manager who can work successfully within organizations; be a visionary strategic thinker; and a dynamic innovator who can develop and operate programs of the highest quality.
-Excellent organizational skills and extreme reliability are required, and the ability to instill confidence and motivate others is essential.
-Must have excellent computer skills, and be particularly adept with electronic mail, word processing, database management, and spreadsheet software.
-Excellent verbal and written communications skills, with particular attention to detail and accuracy, are required. Strong analytical and problem solving skills
required.
-Must be able to handle multiple tasks and to organize and
prioritize workload efficiently, and be able to travel frequently by
automobile or airplane as required.
-Valid Driver License and automobile insurance required.

Compensation: $55,000 to $60,000/year DOE plus benefits.
This position is funded through March 31, 2010 only.

Regional Director Census 2010 - San Antonio, TX

MALDEF’s Southwest Regional Office, located in San Antonio, Texas, seeks to hire a Regional Director of 2010 Census to conduct education and outreach in the Latino community for the upcoming decennial Census. The position is funded for one year from the date of hire. The San Antonio Regional Census Director is responsible
for dissemination critical information to Latinos residing in the states covered by the MALDEF Southwestern office.

Requirements:
-Bachelor’s Degree required.
-A minimum of two years public speaking or community organizing experience is required.
-The successful applicant must have outstanding interpersonal skills and be able to form and maintain relationships and alliances with community members an organizations.
-Strong analytical and problem solving skills are required.
-Must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, travel out of town for periods
of up to one week, and organize and prioritize workload efficiently.
-Must be able to speak Spanish with a high level of fluency. Equal fluency in written Spanish is highly desirable.


Compensation: $39,150 to $43,250 /year DOE plus benefits. Position funded for 12 months.

Regional Director Census 2010 - Washington, DC
